Living Out Love — A Daily Bible Study on 1 John 4:7-8

1 John 4:7-8 (WEB)

Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God. He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

The Divine Source of Love

Beloved friends, welcome to another day with The Bible Club! As we open our Bibles to 1 John 4:7-8, we encounter a foundational truth about our God and our calling as His children. John begins with a tender address, “Beloved,” setting the tone for a message that is both deeply personal and profoundly spiritual. He immediately calls us to “love one another, for love is of God.”

This isn’t merely a suggestion or a good idea; it’s an imperative rooted in the very character of the Almighty. The apostle isn’t saying God has love, or God shows love (though both are true). He declares, unequivocally, “God is love.” This staggering statement reveals love not as an attribute God possesses among others, but as His quintessential nature, His very being. From the Trinity’s eternal communion to the cross of Calvary, God’s every action flows from this intrinsic love. Therefore, when we love, we are not just doing something good; we are participating in the divine nature, reflecting the very heart of God in a fallen world.

The Indication of New Birth

John continues, making a powerful connection between love and our spiritual identity: “Everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God.” This is a crucial diagnostic for our faith. How can we be sure we are genuinely children of God? How can we know we truly know Him? The answer lies in our capacity and commitment to love. This isn’t a superficial, sentimental affection, but a deep, selfless, sacrificial love – the agape love modeled perfectly by Jesus Christ.

Before Christ, our natural state was one of self-love, enmity, and alienation from God and often from one another. But when we are born again by the Spirit, something profound shifts within us. God’s love is poured into our hearts (Romans 5:5), transforming our desires and re orienting our lives. Love for God and love for our neighbor become the authentic, undeniable marks of a changed heart. It’s evidence that the Divine life has been implanted within us, granting us the ability to love as God loves. This new birth isn't something we earn through our own loving efforts, but rather, genuine love is the fruit that grows from the root of a regenerated spirit.

The Inseparable Link: Love and Knowing God

Conversely, John states, “He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God.” This is a stark warning and a bracing challenge. It means that mere intellectual assent to theological truths, or participation in religious rituals, if devoid of genuine love, is insufficient evidence of a true relationship with God. To truly know God is to be transformed by His essence, and since God is love, to know Him deeply is to become a channel of His love.

How can we claim to know the God who sent His only Son to die for us, if we harbor hatred, indifference, or selfishness towards those He also loves—our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and even those outside the faith? Our love for others is not a peripheral aspect of our faith; it is central to our understanding and experience of God. It’s a visible manifestation of an inward reality. Just as light dispels darkness, love in our lives dispels doubt about whether we truly belong to God. As you go about your day, beloved, remember that every act of love, every moment of patience, every gesture of kindness, is a testimony to the God who is love, and an affirmation of your identity as His child.

Reflection Questions

  1. Considering John's declaration that “God is love,” in what specific ways has God's love been evident in your life this past week, both through His direct provision and through the actions of others?
  2. If genuine love for others is evidence of being 'born of God and knowing God,' how might your actions and attitudes towards those around you (especially difficult people) serve as a barometer of your spiritual walk?
  3. What is one practical step you can take today to intentionally demonstrate God's love to someone in your family, community, or even a stranger, and how might this act deepen your own understanding and experience of God?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Giver of all good things, we praise You today for who You are – Love itself. Thank You for revealing Your nature to us and for pouring Your love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Forgive us for the times we have failed to love as You love, for our selfishness, and for our indifference. Empower us by Your Spirit to love one another with a selfless, sacrificial love that testifies to Your truth and grace. May our lives be living demonstrations of Your character, so that others may see You through us. In Jesus' loving name we pray. Amen.
