Finding Steadfast Love — A Daily Bible Study on Psalm 36:5-6

Beloved friends at "The Bible Club," what a joy it is to gather with you today, drawing near to our amazing God through His Word. As we open the Psalms, we find ourselves standing before a breathtaking panorama of God’s character, a truth that grounds us and lifts our eyes heavenward. Today, we anchor our hearts in Psalm 36:5-6, a passage that paints an awe-inspiring picture of our Creator.

### God's Boundless Character

Our verses begin with a declaration that sweeps us off our feet: "Your loving kindness, Yahweh, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies." Think about that for a moment. When you look up at the vast expanse of the sky, stretching as far as the eye can see, that's the imagery David uses to describe God's hesed – His loving-kindness, His covenant love, His loyal affection. It's not limited, not finite, but boundless and immeasurable. It's a love that originates in the very nature of God, not dependent on our performance, but flowing freely from His heart.

And not only is His love expansive, but His "faithfulness reaches to the skies." In a world where promises are often broken and commitments falter, God's faithfulness stands as an unshakeable pillar. He is true to His word, always. Every promise He has ever made, He will keep. This faithfulness is the bedrock of our hope, the assurance that what He has begun in us, He will complete (Philippians 1:6). This is the God who entered into a covenant with Abraham, rescued Israel from Egypt, and ultimately, in the fullness of time, sent His Son. His faithfulness isn't just a concept; it's a living reality woven through the entire tapestry of salvation history, culminating in Christ Jesus.

### The Firm Foundation of His Righteousness and Judgment

The psalmist continues, "Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains. Your judgments are like the great deep." What powerful imagery! The "mighty mountains" speak of permanence, immovability, and strength. God's righteousness isn't shifting sand; it's an eternal range, standing tall and true. He is perfectly just, perfectly good, and always acts in accordance with His holy nature. This righteousness isn't a threat to those who are in Christ, but a comfort, for He has satisfied the demands of His own righteousness through the sacrifice of His Son. Because of Jesus, God is both just and the justifier of those who believe (Romans 3:26).

And His "judgments are like the great deep." The deep is mysterious, profound, and holds untold power. It suggests the unfathomable wisdom and perfect justice with which God governs the universe. We may not always understand His ways, but we can trust that His judgments are always right, always fair, always rooted in His perfect character. It's a sobering thought, but for those who have put their faith in Christ, it's also a comforting one, knowing that ultimate justice will prevail, and all things will be set right.

### God Our Preserver

The passage concludes with the beautiful truth: "Yahweh, you preserve man and animal." This summarises the practical outworking of His boundless attributes. His loving-kindness, faithfulness, righteousness, and just judgments all converge in His active preservation of creation. He sustains life, cares for His creation, and holds all things together. This includes us. He preserves our lives, our souls, and our faith. If He cares for the sparrows, how much more does He care for us, His children, whom He has redeemed at such a great cost?

In Christ, we see all these attributes perfectly displayed. His loving-kindness brought Jesus to the cross. His faithfulness ensured the resurrection. His righteousness was vindicated in Jesus' sinless life and atoning death. And it is through Jesus that we are preserved, not just for this earthly life, but for eternity. Let's rest today in the vastness of our God, whose character is our ultimate security and joy.
