A Life Pleasing to God: A Daily Bible Study on 1 Thessalonians 4:1

1 Thessalonians 4:1 (WEB)

Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, even as you do walk, that you abound more and more.

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, welcome to "The Bible Club"! As we open God's Word today, our hearts turn to the book of 1 Thessalonians, a letter filled with encouragement, instruction, and a powerful vision for Christ-centered living. Penned by the Apostle Paul, this letter reminds us of the foundational truths of our faith and how they shape our daily walk.

Our passage for today, 1 Thessalonians 4:1, is a gentle yet firm exhortation:

"Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, even as you do walk, that you abound more and more."

### The Call to Walk and Please God

Paul begins this section with a passionate plea: "we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus." This isn't a harsh command, but a heartfelt appeal from a spiritual father to his cherished children in the faith. He reminds them of what they "received" from him – not just abstract doctrines, but practical instructions on "how you ought to walk and to please God." The word "walk" in the New Testament is a beautiful metaphor for our daily conduct, our lifestyle, our entire way of life. It encompasses our thoughts, words, actions, and attitudes.

What does it mean to "please God"? For the believer, this is not about earning God's love or favor. We are already lavished with His love and declared righteous through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:8, Ephesians 2:8-9). Our salvation is a gift, completely unmerited. Therefore, pleasing God is not a condition for salvation, but a grateful response to it. It's living in a way that brings joy to the heart of our heavenly Father, recognizing His immense sacrifice and love for us. It's living out the new life He has given us, transformed by His Spirit. As the Thessalonians were already demonstrating this walk, Paul’s words are not a condemnation, but an encouragement to continue and even excel.

### Abounding More and More in Christ

The phrase "that you abound more and more" is key to understanding Christian growth. It speaks to a progressive, dynamic journey of faith. It's not about reaching a static point of perfection and then stopping; it's about continuous development, deeper surrender, and increasing likeness to Christ. This call to "abound more and more" acknowledges that sanctification – the process of becoming more like Jesus – is a lifelong endeavor. It implies that while we may be walking well now, there's always room for growth, always more of God's character to embrace, more of His will to understand and obey.

How do we abound? It's not through striving in our own strength. Paul grounds this exhortation "in the Lord Jesus." This tells us that all our ability to walk in a way that pleases God, and to abound in it, comes from our union with Christ. He is our life, our strength, and our righteousness. It is by dwelling in Him, through prayer, studying His Word, and yielding to the Holy Spirit's leading, that we are empowered to grow. It means intentionally seeking His guidance in every area of our lives – our relationships, our work, our finances, our thoughts, and our words.

This passage beautifully encapsulates the gospel truth: we are saved by grace through faith, and this salvation then empowers us to live a life that pleases God, not out of obligation, but out of profound gratitude and love. Let us, like the Thessalonians, strive to abound more and more, walking in a manner worthy of the calling we have received in Christ Jesus.

May this study encourage you today to reflect on your "walk" and to earnestly seek to please God in all you do, knowing that He has fully equipped you through His Son, Jesus Christ, to do just that.

  3. How does understanding that our ability to please God comes "in the Lord Jesus" free you from striving in your own strength? What practical disciplines can help you rely more on Him for your spiritual growth?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the profound grace shown to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray for open hearts and willing spirits to heed Paul's exhortation today. Guide us, Lord, by Your Holy Spirit, to walk in a manner that truly pleases You. Help us to abound more and more in faith, love, and obedience, not out of duty, but out of a deep and grateful love for You. May our lives be a fragrant offering to Your glory. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
