Psalm 91:1-2 (WEB)

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.'

# Finding Strength in God's Shelter

Welcome back, beloved friends of The Bible Club! Today, we turn our hearts and minds to a passage from the Psalms that speaks deeply to our need for security and peace in a world often marked by uncertainty and fear. Let's open our Bibles to Psalm 91, starting with the first two powerful verses:

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.'"

What a promise! What an invitation! These verses are not merely beautiful poetic imagery; they are profound truths about the character of God and our privileged position in Him through Christ.

Dwelling in the Secret Place

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High..." The idea of dwelling implies more than a transient visit; it suggests a continual, intentional abiding. To 'dwell' means to make your home, to live, to reside permanently. And where is this dwelling? It's in the "secret place of the Most High." What does this mean for us today?

For followers of Jesus, this 'secret place' isn't a physical location we can pinpoint on a map. Instead, it refers to the profound intimacy and communion we can have with God. Before Christ, access to God's immediate presence was restricted, symbolized by the veil in the temple. But at the moment of Jesus' death, that veil was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51), signifying that the way to God's presence was now open to all who come by faith in His Son.

Through Jesus, we have been given direct access to the Father. He is our High Priest, our mediator, and it is in Him that we are brought into fellowship with the Most High God. To dwell in this 'secret place' means to cultivate an ongoing relationship with God through prayer, through studying His Word, through worship, and through obedience. It means living with an awareness of His presence surrounding us, guiding us, and sustaining us. When we dwell there, our hearts find rest "in the shadow of the Almighty."

Resting in the Shadow of the Almighty

The image of resting "in the shadow of the Almighty" is deeply comforting. A shadow provides protection from the harsh sun, a place of coolness and relief. The "Almighty" (El Shaddai in Hebrew) speaks of God's limitless power, His all-sufficiency, His ability to nourish and protect. Think of a chick finding shelter under the wings of its mother, safe from predators and the elements. That's the picture here.

In Christ, we are brought under the protective shadow of God's omnipotent power. No trial is too great for Him; no enemy is too strong. This doesn't mean we won't face challenges or difficulties, but it does mean that in the midst of them, we are shielded by God's sovereign care. Our rest is not in the absence of trouble, but in the presence of an all-powerful, all-loving God who is greater than any trouble.

This rest is a profound peace that transcends understanding (Philippians 4:7). It's a conviction that no matter what comes, God is in control, and He is working all things for our good and His glory (Romans 8:28).

Proclaiming Our Trust: Refuge and Fortress

Then, the Psalmist makes a personal declaration: "I will say of Yahweh, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.'" This isn't just an intellectual assent to theological truths; it's a heartfelt, verbal proclamation based on personal experience and understanding of God's character.

'Refuge' speaks of a safe place to flee to in times of danger. Think of ancient cities of refuge. God is our ultimate place of safety. 'Fortress' implies strength, an impregnable stronghold that withstands attack. God is not merely a hideout; He is our strong defense, our impenetrable shield.

Notice the personal pronouns: "my refuge," "my fortress," "my God." This relationship is intimate and personal. The Psalmist doesn't just acknowledge God's general protective nature; he claims it for himself. This is a vital part of our faith: moving from knowing about God to knowing Him personally and trusting Him implicitly. And to name "Yahweh" – the covenant name of God – highlights His faithfulness to His promises.

In Jesus Christ, we see the ultimate embodiment of God's faithfulness, refuge, and strength. He is the Rock on which we build our lives, the One in whom we can place our complete trust, knowing He will never fail us. As we dwell in Him, we rest securely in the shadow of the Almighty, able to declare with conviction: "He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."

May this truth anchor your soul today and always, dear friends. Let us strive to truly dwell in His presence, finding our rest and boldly proclaiming our trust in Him.
