A Life Pleasing to God — A Daily Bible Study on 1 Thessalonians 4:1

1 Thessalonians 4:1 (WEB)

Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, even as you do walk, that you abound more and more.

Welcome, dear friends, to The Bible Club! It's a joy to gather with you today as we open God's Word and allow His Spirit to speak to our hearts. Our passage today comes from the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonian believers, a community he deeply loved and had poured his life into. Specifically, we'll be looking at 1 Thessalonians 4:1.

"Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, even as you do walk, that you abound more and more."

What a beautiful and profound invitation this single verse extends to us! Paul, with both tenderness and urgency, “begs and exhorts” them – and us – in the powerful name of the Lord Jesus. His message isn't a stern command but a loving appeal, a gentle nudge toward a deeper, more fulfilling life. He's reminding them of something they've already embraced: "how you ought to walk and to please God."

Walking in a Manner Worthy

The phrase "how you ought to walk" is a common biblical idiom for our conduct, our daily life, and the way we live. It encompasses our thoughts, words, actions, and attitudes. When Paul speaks of walking "to please God," he's getting to the very heart of the Christian life. Our ultimate aim, as those redeemed by Christ, is to bring glory and pleasure to our Heavenly Father. This isn't about earning His love or salvation – those are free gifts purchased by Christ on the cross. Rather, it's the natural outflow of a heart that has been transformed by His grace. Just as children delight in pleasing a loving parent, so too do we, the children of God, find joy in living in a way that honors Him.

But what does it mean to "please God"? It means aligning our lives with His character and His will as revealed in His Word. It means loving Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves. It means living in obedience, not out of compulsion, but out of a deep and abiding love and gratitude for what Christ has done for us. It means cultivating holiness, righteousness, and humility, empowered by the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer.

Abounding More and More

Paul adds a crucial encouragement: "even as you do walk, that you abound more and more." This is a powerful statement. He acknowledges their current progress. "You are pleasing God," he says, and encourages them, "now, do more of it!" This isn't a challenge to perform better to somehow gain God's favor. No, it's an invitation to deeper growth, richer fellowship, and greater fruitfulness. It's a call to continuous spiritual development, to not be content with where we are, but to press on toward the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).

To "abound more and more" means to grow in grace, in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, in love for one another, and in all the spiritual virtues. It means becoming more like Christ each day, experiencing more of His power and presence in our lives. This progressive sanctification is a lifelong journey, a partnership between God's Spirit working within us and our willing participation in His work. It's a joyful pursuit, not a burdensome obligation.

Empowered by Christ, Living for God

It's vital to remember the context: "in the Lord Jesus." Our ability to walk in a manner pleasing to God doesn't come from our own strength or willpower. It flows from our union with Christ. He is our life, our righteousness, and our strength. By His Spirit, we are enabled to live lives that honor Him. This truth is incredibly liberating. We aren't striving in our own strength to meet an impossible standard; we are resting in Christ's finished work and allowing His life to be lived through us.

So today, let's take Paul’s loving exhortation to heart. Let's reflect on how we are walking and how we can "abound more and more" in pleasing our gracious God. This daily walk is not just a duty; it is our highest privilege and greatest joy. May we all, by God's grace, continually strive to live lives that bring a smile to our Father's face, for His glory and for our good.

Reflection Questions

  1. What specific areas of your life (thoughts, words, actions) do you believe currently bring pleasure to God, and why?
  2. In what ways can you actively seek to "abound more and more" in pleasing God in the coming week? Be specific about a practical step you can take.
  3. How does remembering that our ability to please God comes "in the Lord Jesus" encourage you when facing personal struggles or failures?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the incredible privilege of knowing You and being called Your children. We pray for open hearts and willing spirits to heed Paul’s exhortation. Help us, by Your Holy Spirit, to increasingly walk in a manner that pleases You in every aspect of our lives. May our desire to honor You grow daily, not out of duty, but from a heart overflowing with gratitude for Jesus. Strengthen us to abound more and more in love, holiness, and obedience, always for Your glory. Amen.
