Seeking First His Kingdom — A Daily Bible Study on Matthew 6:33

Matthew 6:33 (WEB)

But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Beloved friends, grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ! Welcome to another day with The Bible Club, where we open God's Word together and allow His Spirit to transform our hearts. Today, we turn our attention to a profound and foundational verse from the Sermon on the Mount, a declaration from Jesus Himself that reorients our entire lives.

### The All-Encompassing Call

Jesus' words in Matthew 6:33 are not a suggestion; they are a clear, compelling command: "But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well." This comes at the end of a section where Jesus has been addressing anxiety over material needs – food, drink, clothing. He's just told us not to worry, because our heavenly Father knows what we need. Then, He delivers this powerful antidote to worry and misplaced priorities.

"Seek first God's Kingdom." What does this mean? It means to make God's reign, His rule, and His sovereign will the absolute top priority in your life. It means desiring to see His justice, His love, and His truth established in your own heart, in your home, in your community, and in the world. It’s about aligning your desires with His, asking "What would bring glory to God?" before asking "What would benefit me?"

And not just the Kingdom, but "his righteousness." This is crucial. We cannot earn God's Kingdom; it is a gift of His grace. And we cannot achieve true righteousness on our own. Our righteousness is found in Christ alone. To seek His righteousness is to humble ourselves, confess our sin, and embrace the perfect, imputed righteousness that Jesus offers through His sacrifice on the cross. It’s about living out the new life He has given us, empowered by the Holy Spirit, striving to live in obedience to His commands, not out of duty, but out of grateful love for what He has done.

### The Divine Promise

Notice the incredible promise attached to this command: "and all these things will be given to you as well." What are "these things"? Look back a few verses in Matthew 6, and you'll see Jesus referencing what we eat, what we drink, and what we wear. The very things that occupy so much of humanity's worry and effort. Jesus isn't saying that we won't face challenges, or that we won't need to work. What He is saying is that when our deepest longing and primary pursuit is God and His glory, He will faithfully take care of our physical, material, and emotional needs. He knows what we need before we ask, and He is a good Father who delights in providing for His children.

This isn't a prosperity gospel that promises wealth for faith. It's a gospel of provision and peace. It's about trusting that the God who created the universe, who clothes the lilies of the field, and who feeds the birds of the air, will certainly not neglect His beloved children for whom He gave His only Son. When our focus shifts from 'what do I need?' to 'how can I glorify God?', our anxieties begin to dissipate, replaced by a profound peace that transcends understanding.

### Living Kingdom-First

To live out Matthew 6:33 is to daily surrender our plans, our worries, and our ambitions to Christ. It means waking up and asking, "How can I seek Your Kingdom today, Lord?" It means making choices that reflect His character, speaking words that build up, and serving others as an act of worship. It means relying on His Holy Spirit to guide us in every decision, big or small.

Brothers and sisters, in a world full of distractions and anxieties, let us heed Jesus' timeless call. Let us fix our eyes not on what the world offers or what our flesh demands, but on the eternal, glorious Kingdom of God. As we wholeheartedly pursue Him and His righteousness, we will discover not only that our needs are met, but that our lives are filled with an incomparable joy, purpose, and peace that only He can give. May we truly make Him our first love, our first priority, and our ultimate treasure.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some 'things' (concerns, desires, priorities) that often compete with seeking God's Kingdom first in your life? How can you intentionally shift your focus back to Him?
  2. How does understanding Jesus' perfect righteousness, freely given to us, impact your desire to 'seek His righteousness'? What does this look like in your daily walk?
  3. Consider a specific area of worry or need in your life right now. How can you apply the promise of Matthew 6:33 to that situation, trusting God for His provision as you prioritize His Kingdom?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the clear and comforting words of Your Son, Jesus. Forgive us when our hearts are prone to worry and when we seek the things of this world before Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Help us, by Your Holy Spirit, to reorient our lives around You. May our greatest desire be to see Your will done, Your name glorified, and Your love extended through us. We trust in Your faithful provision for all our needs as we make You our first and only priority. Amen.
